Hold on to your best talent

A new study reveals the importance of collaboration and flexibility in professional firms for retaining the best and brightest young people.

Hold on to your best talent

Is your workplace a flexible and collaborative one? For accounting firms, having such a workplace is crucial to retaining the best employees. Millennials value employers that offer greater flexibility and team collaboration according to research by professional services advisory firm PwC.

The recent PwC’s Next Gen: A Global Generational Study, found that traditional factors such as fair pay, a stable upward career path and the prestige of partnership remain essential, but were not enough to retain valuable talent long term. In the future, firms that create a workplace characterised by flexible and collaborative working arrangements will have the edge in attracting and retaining the best and brightest.

Accelerate the integration of technology into the workplace, enabling workers to harness technology in ways that give them more flexibility and increase efficiency. To millennials this is an absolute must—they expect to have access to the best tools for collaboration and execution.

Consider your own accounting practice: do your team members collaborate as well as they could, especially at tax time? If some of them are working offsite, the motivation might already be there, but the tools are lacking for effective collaboration.

A more flexible and collaborative working environment is one where connecting with clients and colleagues is simple and intuitive. IP telephony – internet and phone all bundled as one seamless service in the cloud – is a tool that can foster employee collaboration in ways never before possible. For example, you can bring in colleagues on client conference calls instantly, wherever they are located. IP telephony also enables easy video conferencing, making face to face contact between team members possible across multiple sites.

If you want to hold onto your best people, technology tools that help engender job satisfaction are important. As the PwC report recommends in its conclusion: “Accelerate the integration of technology into the workplace, enabling workers to harness technology in ways that give them more flexibility and increase efficiency. To Millennials this is an absolute must – they expect to have access to the best tools for collaboration and execution.”In
